    Training to be an Air Astana pilot

    Air Astana operates to the highest standards and recruits only the most suitable candidates for each role at the airline. However, for people with the right aptitude, education and motivation, it is possible to train “from scratch” for the role of pilot with Air Astana. Such individuals receive rigorous training and, if successful, graduate to one of the most important jobs in our organization.

    Do you have what it takes?

    We are looking for young Kazakhstani citizens who are motivated to become pilots for our company. A programme called Ab-Initio (Latin for “from the beginning”) has been put in place to enable successful candidates to study at a reputable aviation school overseas. However, you must first satisfy the Ab-Initio selection requirements listed below.

    The Ab-Initio selection process

    Candidates must meet the following criteria:

    • Be a citizen of Kazakhstan
    • Be aged18 years to 29 years
    • Have School/College certificates
    • Have a minimum progressive score of not less than 4.5 on the final school certificate
    • Have a minimum score in Maths and Physics of not less than 4
    • Have a clean police record
    • Agree that Air Astana will deal directly with the lending bank on behalf of the student until full repayment of the Ab-Initio loan
    • Have a valid international passport
    • Be eligible for Schengen and US visas
    • Agree to sign a bond for a period of minimum 7 years for employment as a pilot with Air Astana.

    Required documents:

    • Curriculum vitae
    • Application form
    • ID card and/or passport (copies)     
    • Certificate of secondary education with enclosure (copy)
    • Certificate of Common National Testing (copy, if available)
    • Diploma (certificate of degree) with enclosure (copy); bachelor/ masters, if available
    • IELTS/ TOEFL certificates (if available).

    Those candidates whose documents are acceptable will be invited for interview.

    Candidates Selection

    The selection process has two stages:

    Stage 1:

    a) English interview (candidates must have good written and spoken English)

    b) Kazakhstan Pilot Medical Exam

    c) Kazakhstan Security Background Check.

    Stage 2:

    Candidates who pass the interview will be scheduled for Phase 1 COMPASS assessment in Almaty. Those who successfully pass Phase 1 will progress to be evaluated at Phases 2 and 3. English Assessment will be conducted by the Flight Training Organization (FTO) staff, who will allocate places on the Ab-Initio course.


    Phase 1:  Aptitude tests on physics and maths and a psychometric test

    Phase 2:

    a) Psychometric test with the training providers

    b) English interview - language proficiency to International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) required standards will be assessed by the training providers.

    Phase 3:

    a) Flight-simulator assessment

    b) Joint Aviation Authorities (JAA) medical check

    Notes:

    If a participant fails local selection, he/she may reapply once more only, a minimum of 12 months after the first unsuccessful attempt (except those who failed the medical examination).

    If a participant fails selection after assessment by the training providers (Stage 2 psychometric test; Phase 3 flight-simulator assessment) he/she will not be allowed to reapply.

    Those candidates who are unsuccessful in training at the FTO will not be allowed to reapply for the programme.
